Meeting Minutes – March 2015

Present: Karl Johnson, Cheri Tutterow, Larry Hart, Larry Hickman, Larry Richards, Cheryl Moore, Audrey Sperry, Lyndee Shaw, Paul LeFrancois

Karl opened the meeting with updates from board members.

Lyndee- She has organized the Red Horse Inn Ride and Wine Tasting Tour in Landrum.  This will be on April 11th and cost $10 for FW members, $20 for non-members.  The ride includes a SAG stop and when you return, you will get samples of wine and one sandwich.  There will be two mileage options, cue sheets will be available.   This ride is for cyclists of ANY level- a beautiful ride through the rolling hills of the country side.  This is not a race, just a relaxing ride!  Please RSVP so the Inn will know how many riders to expect for food purposes.

Larry Hart- gave PAL the donation for $5000 that the board approved.  Went over our February numbers and gave final figures for all accounts ($106, 867)

Audrey- brought a map detailing upcoming trails in the Spartanburg area! Many will begin in the months ahead to be completed within 2 years, others are expected to be finished within a 10 year period.  These are 10 ft. wide paths that will be a great asset to our area and hopefully get more citizens outside and exercising!  The total miles of trails are approx. 150!

Paul- Plans to do Jazz on the Square in May; set up a table with PCC and FW info (raise awareness for Bike Month) He also wants to plan several Nature/History walks though Spartanburg.  Paul, or another certified Bike League Ambassador, will be coming to Chapman High School in May to speak to the Drivers Ed class about bike safety and laws.  Hopefully, this will open the door for them to reach out to other high schools in our area and speak to our young adults who do not know/learn anything regarding cyclist’s safety.  The PCC has hired a new man to help them with laws, namely the Vulnerable User Law, which would make it a felony if you hit or injured a cyclist.

There will be a Miracle Hill Ride on April 18th from Bicycle Time on Hwy 9 in Boiling Springs.  There will be a cost of $5, but you get food after the ride and we are hoping for a SAG (not confirmed.) This is a combined ride for Miracle Hill charity/Grand Opening for Bicycle Time/Mt. Mitchell training ride (at this time) There will be several different levels for riders to join, likely from A-C.  Overflow parking will be at BS First Baptist Church, but your can ride your bike about a ½ mile to the bike shop for the start/finish.  Look for more details on the eride and Freewheelers website as it approaches.

Larry Hart brought up the idea of having a social to get all riders together and more involved with each other.  A movie or picnic were ideas tossed around.  The Freewheelers is an organization that represents ALL cyclists, not just a certain group, and we want to think of ways for all riders to feel welcome and involved.  We encourage all members to come to meetings each month.  If you can’t make the meetings, please email ideas or suggestions.  The board represents each member out there.  We are your voice.  Please try to come to any social events that we plan- we do these for YOU!

Meeting adjourned.
